Western music divides each octave into 12 equal semitones (half-steps). Each semitone represents a frequency ratio of 2^(1/12) ≈ 1.0595. Shifting up one semitone multiplies the frequency by ~1.06; shifting down one semitone multiplies by ~0.944. To move from one musical key to another: C → D = +2 semitones, C → G = +7 semitones, C → F = -5 semitones (or +7 going the other way). Knowing the source and target key allows you to calculate the exact semitone shift needed.

Why the ±4 Semitone Limit?

Pitch-shifting algorithms introduce artefacts when the shift amount is large. The Rubber Band algorithm handles ±4 semitones very cleanly on most material. Beyond that, artefacts become increasingly noticeable — especially on audio with clear pitch content like solo vocals or piano. For transpositions greater than ±4 semitones, a professional DAW with high-quality pitch correction (Melodyne, Waves SoundShifter, Serato Pitch 'n' Time) is the appropriate tool.
