When you convert a PDF to DOCX, LibreOffice's Draw and Writer modules parse the PDF's internal object stream — extracting text runs, font metrics, image objects, and path data. Text is reconstructed into paragraphs based on font size, position, and spacing heuristics. Tables are inferred from the spatial alignment of text blocks. The more consistently the original PDF was structured (e.g. generated from Word itself), the higher the fidelity of the round-trip conversion.

Accuracy depends on how the PDF was created. Text-based PDFs (from Word or InDesign) convert with 95%+ accuracy including styles, tables, and columns. Scanned PDFs require OCR — use our dedicated OCR tool for best results.
For scanned PDFs, first use our OCR Tool to extract the text, then convert the output. Direct PDF-to-DOCX conversion of scanned files will only contain images without editable text.
Default is 150 dpi (suitable for screen). Select "High Quality" in options for 300 dpi output, which is print-ready. Very large PDFs at 300 dpi may take longer to process.
If you know the password, enter it in the options field and we will attempt to unlock the file for conversion. We cannot crack unknown PDF passwords.
Basic table structure (rows and columns) is preserved. Complex merged cells, colours, and conditional formatting may be lost — the primary goal is data extraction.
Free conversion supports PDFs up to 100 MB with no hard page limit. Very large PDFs (500+ pages) may take 30–60 seconds to process.

PDF conversion sounds simple but is deceptively complex — the format was designed for consistent visual output, not for re-editing. Understanding the underlying engines helps you choose the right approach.
How PDF to Word Conversion Works
PDF to Image: Rendering with Poppler
Converting PDF pages to JPG or PNG requires rasterising each page — effectively "printing" it to a virtual canvas. We use Poppler's pdftoppm utility, which implements the PDF rendering specification accurately including transparency groups, blending modes, and embedded ICC colour profiles. At 150 dpi a standard A4 page renders to roughly 1240×1754 pixels; at 300 dpi this doubles to 2480×3508 — suitable for print reproduction.
Converting Word and Excel to PDF
LibreOffice headless mode processes DOCX and XLSX files identically to opening them in the LibreOffice GUI — evaluating formulas, resolving styles, and rendering the layout engine — before exporting via its built-in PDF export filter. This means page breaks, header/footer styles, column layouts, and embedded images all render correctly without needing Microsoft Office on the server.
When to Use OCR Instead
If your PDF was created by scanning a physical document (rather than being digitally generated), the "PDF" is essentially a container of images with no text layer. Standard PDF-to-Word conversion will only extract the images. For scanned documents, use the OCR Tool first to add a searchable text layer, then convert the resulting PDF or TXT output as needed.
